Moon Phase Compatibility Calculator
This free moon phase compatibility calculator tells you whether two birthdays make moon soulmates, twin flames or a pair in between. Soulmates are opposite phases that add up to one Full Moon. Enter two birthdays and you’ll see each person’s birth moon phase and the pairing type in about ten seconds. It’s a symbolic tradition, not science.
Free to use, with no sign-up. Run it as many times as you like.
What moon phases are soulmates?
Moon phase soulmates are two people born under opposite phases, exactly 180° apart in the lunar cycle. Their lit portions add up to a whole. When one Moon is a thin crescent, the other is nearly full, and together they make one complete Moon. These four matching moon phases are the only soulmate pairs:
| Phase 1 | Phase 2 | Lit together |
| New Moon | Full Moon | 0% + 100%: the two ends of the cycle |
| Waxing Crescent | Waning Gibbous | about 15% + 85% |
| First Quarter | Last Quarter | 50% + 50%: two half moons |
| Waxing Gibbous | Waning Crescent | about 85% + 15% |
Here’s the deal: each phase has exactly one soulmate phase, so the list stays short. Everything else gets a different label, covered below.
New Moon and Full Moon compatibility
New Moon and Full Moon is the starkest soulmate pair: one is fully dark, one is fully lit, and each carries what the other lacks. Tradition reads the New Moon as beginnings and instinct, and the Full Moon as fulfillment and awareness. Together they’re private and public, quiet and bold.
Waxing Crescent and Waning Gibbous compatibility
Waxing Crescent and Waning Gibbous make the classic teacher and student match. One person is just starting to grow, and the other has built something and wants to share it. Early curiosity meets late-cycle generosity, and their lit portions, about 15% and 85%, make one whole Moon.
First Quarter and Last Quarter compatibility
First Quarter and Last Quarter are two half moons that mirror each other. In the Northern Hemisphere, the First Quarter is lit on the right and the Last Quarter on the left. First Quarter pushes forward and decides, while Last Quarter reviews and lets go.
Waxing Gibbous and Waning Crescent compatibility
Waxing Gibbous and Waning Crescent pair effort with surrender. Waxing Gibbous refines and works toward the finish, while Waning Crescent has already let go and rests. Each balances the other.
We find the Moon phase on each date and show how the two fit together.
Why are these four pairs the right soulmates?
Each pair is 180° apart in the angle between the Moon and the Sun, which is half a lunar month, about 14.8 days. That’s the only definition of “opposite” that holds up.
Some sites list other pairs as soulmates, and you’d think they’d agree by now. They don’t. If a pair’s lit portions don’t add up to 100%, it isn’t an opposite, no exceptions. Enter two birthdays in the calculator above to see where your pair lands.
What are twin flame moon phases?
Twin flame moon phases are two people born under the same phase. In moon phase astrology, a twin flame match shares the same rhythm, the same instincts and the same blind spots. Where soulmates complete each other, twin flames mirror each other.
Soulmates feel like balance, and twin flames feel like recognition. Which is better? Neither.
Turns out the odds are even. Each phase covers the same 45° slice of the cycle, so about one pair in eight shares a phase, and about one pair in eight is a soulmate pair. Either result is worth noticing, but neither is rare. Each phase has its own twin flame meaning:
- New Moon twins start things and trust their gut.
- Waxing Crescent twins are determined and still finding their footing.
- First Quarter twins act fast and don’t avoid conflict.
- Waxing Gibbous twins refine, plan and fix details.
- Full Moon twins are intense, open and expressive.
- Waning Gibbous twins teach, share and give back.
- Last Quarter twins question what they built and change course.
- Waning Crescent twins rest, release and look inward.
When both birthdays fall under the same phase, the calculator labels the result Twin Flames and tells you which phase you share.
Which other moon phases are compatible?
Beyond soulmates and twin flames, every other pair is a neighbor, a quarter-cycle pair or a near opposite, depending on how many steps apart the two phases sit in the eight-phase cycle. Opposites aren’t the only pairs people look up, so the calculator labels every pair by distance:
| Steps apart | Pairing type | Example |
| 0 | Twin Flames | Full Moon and Full Moon |
| 1 | Neighbors | New Moon and Waxing Crescent |
| 2 | Quarter Cycle | New Moon and First Quarter |
| 3 | Near Opposites | Waxing Crescent and Full Moon |
| 4 | Moon Soulmates | Waxing Gibbous and Waning Crescent |
Waxing Crescent and Waning Crescent compatibility
Waxing Crescent and Waning Crescent are a quarter cycle apart: same size, opposite directions. Both are thin crescents about 15% lit, but one is growing and one is fading, so they sit on either side of the New Moon. Both lean toward the New Moon’s inward themes, though one is just beginning and the other is finishing. Expect shared quiet and different timing.
Waxing Gibbous and Waning Gibbous compatibility
Waxing Gibbous and Waning Gibbous are also a quarter cycle apart, this time on either side of the Full Moon. Both are about 85% lit, one approaching fullness and one past it. A Waxing Gibbous person refines and improves, while a Waning Gibbous person shares and teaches. The pairing is lively and sometimes frustrating, and each can learn from the other.
Are Waning Gibbous and Waxing Crescent soulmates?
Yes. Waning Gibbous and Waxing Crescent are one of the four soulmate pairs above, not a near miss. Waning Gibbous is about 85% lit and Waxing Crescent about 15%, so together they make a whole.
What are neighbors and near-opposite moon phases?
Neighbors are one step apart, and near opposites are three steps apart. Neighbors have an easy, familiar rhythm because they sit at almost the same point in the cycle. Near opposites have much of the pull of soulmates, with more friction. Neither is a warning sign: the label describes the distance between two phases, not whether a relationship will work.
Moon phase compatibility chart: all 64 pairings
This moon phase compatibility chart covers all 64 pairings: find your phase down the side and the other person’s phase across the top, and the cell shows the pairing type. The chart is symmetrical, so the order of the two people doesn’t matter.
| New | Wax. Crescent | 1st Quarter | Wax. Gibbous | Full | Wan. Gibbous | Last Quarter | Wan. Crescent | |
| New Moon | Twin flame | Neighbor | Quarter cycle | Near opposite | Soulmate | Near opposite | Quarter cycle | Neighbor |
| Waxing Crescent | Neighbor | Twin flame | Neighbor | Quarter cycle | Near opposite | Soulmate | Near opposite | Quarter cycle |
| First Quarter | Quarter cycle | Neighbor | Twin flame | Neighbor | Quarter cycle | Near opposite | Soulmate | Near opposite |
| Waxing Gibbous | Near opposite | Quarter cycle | Neighbor | Twin flame | Neighbor | Quarter cycle | Near opposite | Soulmate |
| Full Moon | Soulmate | Near opposite | Quarter cycle | Neighbor | Twin flame | Neighbor | Quarter cycle | Near opposite |
| Waning Gibbous | Near opposite | Soulmate | Near opposite | Quarter cycle | Neighbor | Twin flame | Neighbor | Quarter cycle |
| Last Quarter | Quarter cycle | Near opposite | Soulmate | Near opposite | Quarter cycle | Neighbor | Twin flame | Neighbor |
| Waning Crescent | Neighbor | Quarter cycle | Near opposite | Soulmate | Near opposite | Quarter cycle | Neighbor | Twin flame |
Each row has exactly one soulmate and one twin flame, and the soulmate always sits four steps around the cycle. The chart sorts pairs by distance on the lunar cycle. It’s not a score of whether a relationship will work.
What moon phase was I born under?
Want just your own phase? The birthday moon phase calculator takes one birth date and shows the phase the Moon was in on the day you were born, how much of it was lit, and the phase the day before and the day after.
If you’d rather figure it out by hand, use the table. The angle is how far the Moon is ahead of the Sun along its path across the sky. At 0° the Moon is new, and at 180° it’s full.
| Phase | Moon–Sun angle | Lit | Days after New Moon (about) | Symbolic meaning |
| New Moon | 337.5° to 22.5° | 0–3.8% | 27.7 to 1.8 | Beginnings, instinct, privacy |
| Waxing Crescent | 22.5° to 67.5° | 3.8–30.9% | 1.8 to 5.5 | Emerging, determination |
| First Quarter | 67.5° to 112.5° | 30.9–69.1% | 5.5 to 9.2 | Action, decisions, challenge |
| Waxing Gibbous | 112.5° to 157.5° | 69.1–96.2% | 9.2 to 12.9 | Refinement, analysis, patience |
| Full Moon | 157.5° to 202.5° | 96.2–100% | 12.9 to 16.6 | Fulfillment, awareness, openness |
| Waning Gibbous | 202.5° to 247.5° | 96.2–69.1% | 16.6 to 20.3 | Sharing, teaching, gratitude |
| Last Quarter | 247.5° to 292.5° | 69.1–30.9% | 20.3 to 24.0 | Reassessing, release, change of mind |
| Waning Crescent | 292.5° to 337.5° | 30.9–3.8% | 24.0 to 27.7 | Rest, surrender, reflection |
The meanings are short summaries written for this site, based on the eight-phase cycle used in modern lunar astrology. They’re a symbolic tradition, not a finding of science.
What if I was born close to a phase change?
A birth within a few hours of a phase change can land on either side of the boundary, depending on the time and the time zone. The catch is how short phases are: the Moon moves about 12° a day relative to the Sun, so a phase lasts around 3.7 days on average.
If you don’t enter a birth time and the phase changes during your birth date (we check the whole day in UTC), the result says so and names both phases. The lookup also shows the phase on the day before and the day after. The good news is the fix is quick: add a birth time and time zone for an exact answer.
Some birth certificates list the time of birth, and hospital records or a parent’s memory can fill the gap. The Moon runs on its own clock, and paperwork runs on another.
Does the Southern Hemisphere change my moon phase?
No. The phase names and the pairings are the same everywhere. Only the direction of the lit side flips, because the Moon looks mirrored south of the equator. The tool has a Northern sky and Southern sky switch at the top that mirrors every Moon it draws, so you can match what you see from your own sky.
How does the moon soulmate test work?
The moon soulmate test takes two birthdays and returns a compatibility reading in four steps:
- Enter two birthdays. Choose the month, then type the day and the four-digit year. The year matters, because the same date falls under a different phase every year. Years from 1900 to 2100 work. If you know the birth time, choose Add birth time and enter it with the time zone.
- We find each Moon phase. We calculate where the Moon and the Sun were on each date and measure the angle between them.
- We compare the two phases. We count how many of the eight steps apart they are, from 0 (the same phase) to 4 (exact opposites).
- You get your result. It shows both phases, how much of the Moon was lit, the pairing type and a short reading.
Think of it as a moon phase soulmate calculator and a moon phase compatibility calculator in one tool. Soulmates are the four opposite pairs, and everything else gets a label that says how close the two phases sit in the cycle.
What does a moon soulmate result look like?
Every result shows two phases, how far apart they are in the cycle, and the pairing type that distance gives you. Here’s a real one for two people born on June 4, 1992 and July 26, 1994. Choose Try an example in the calculator above to load these two dates.
| Person 1 | Person 2 | |
| Birthday | June 4, 1992 | July 26, 1994 |
| Birth moon phase | Waxing Crescent | Waning Gibbous |
| Illumination | about 15% lit | about 85% lit |
Result: Moon Soulmates. Waxing Crescent and Waning Gibbous sit exactly opposite each other in the lunar cycle, half a lunar month apart. Their lit portions add up to about 100%, so together they make one Full Moon. The chart above shows all 64 combinations.
How do I share or save my result?
Every result has three buttons. Share opens your phone’s share sheet with the result image attached, or copies a message and link on a computer. Save image downloads the result as a portrait picture (1080 × 1350 pixels).
Copy link gives you a link that opens the same result, so the other person doesn’t have to retype any dates. That makes it easy to compare birthdays with a partner, a friend or a family member. The two birthdays sit in the link after the # sign, so anyone who has the link can read them. Send it only to people you’d tell those dates to.
Can you use moon phase compatibility for couples, friends and family?
Yes. Any two people have two birth moon phases, and the pairing type means the same thing for everyone, whether you’re in a relationship or not.
Moon phase compatibility for couples
A moon phase couple reading starts with two birthdays. The result is your couple moon phase: each partner’s phase and the pairing type between them. Opposites often feel like completion, because each person carries what the other lacks. Twin flames feel like recognition, and neighbors share an easy rhythm. Treat the result as a conversation starter, not a verdict.
Couples can compare more than birthdays. Try an anniversary or a first-date moon against each birthday and see what comes up.
Moon phase compatibility for friends
Friends with the same or neighboring phases tend to move at the same pace and understand each other fast. Friends who are a quarter cycle or a near opposite apart bring different instincts to the same problem. Many people find those friendships stretch them the most.
Moon phase compatibility for parents, children and siblings
Family members can share a phase or sit at opposite ends of the cycle with no say in the matter. A parent and child who are twin flames may recognize themselves in each other, and a parent and child who are soulmates may balance each other. Siblings often end up in different phases, which is a good excuse to compare birthdays at the next family dinner.
What’s the difference between moon phase and moon sign?
Moon phase and moon sign are two different things, and both come from your birth date. The phase tells you where the Moon was in its cycle, and the sign tells you which zodiac sign it sat in.
| Moon phase | Moon sign | |
| What it is | The angle between the Moon and the Sun | The zodiac sign the Moon was in |
| How often it changes | Completes a cycle in about 29.5 days | Changes about every 2¼ days |
| What it describes | Your stage in the lunar cycle and your pace | Your emotional style |
| Needs birth time? | Helpful near a phase boundary | Helpful near a sign boundary |
This calculator covers moon phase only. It tells you where you were in the cycle and how that lines up with someone else’s phase, not which sign the Moon was in.
How is a birth moon phase calculated?
Your birth moon phase comes from the angle between the Moon and the Sun on your birth date, worked out with the series in Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms and checked against PyEphem, an astronomy library.
We work out the position of the Moon and the Sun along the ecliptic, the path they trace across the sky. The series is cut down to its largest terms, and the calculation runs in your browser. We tested it on 3,000 dates between 1900 and 2100. The largest difference in the Moon–Sun angle was 0.036°, which is about four minutes of Moon motion.
- Find both positions. If you don’t enter a birth time, we use 12:00 UTC on your date. If you add a birth time and time zone, we convert them to UTC first.
- Measure the angle. The Moon’s position minus the Sun’s, wrapped to 0–360°, is the elongation. 0° is a New Moon, 90° a First Quarter, 180° a Full Moon and 270° a Last Quarter.
- Work out how much is lit. Illumination is (1 − cos of the angle) ÷ 2. At 45° that’s about 15%, and at 135° about 85%.
- Pick the phase. The eight phases are 45° slots centered on 0°, 45°, 90° and so on. The table in the birth-phase section above lists the exact bands.
- Compare two phases. The distance in steps (0 to 4) sets the pairing type. Four steps apart, 180°, is a soulmate pair.
The phase and pairing meanings are short summaries written for this site, based on the eight-phase cycle used in modern lunar astrology. They’re a symbolic tradition.
Sources and further reading: Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms (Willmann-Bell), for the Moon and Sun positions. Dane Rudhyar, The Lunation Cycle, for background on the eight-phase idea.
Is the moon phase soulmate test accurate?
The astronomy is accurate, and the compatibility prediction is symbolic.
Is the moon phase calculation accurate?
Yes. The Moon phase for any date is a calculation, not an opinion. We tested ours against an independent astronomy library, and the largest difference was about four minutes of Moon motion. Without a birth time we use noon UTC, and if the phase changes during your birth date, the result tells you and names both phases.
Is moon phase compatibility scientific?
No. There’s no scientific evidence that your birth moon phase predicts who you’ll get along with or who you’ll love. Moon phase compatibility is a tradition built on the idea that the Moon’s cycle is a pattern for human cycles. Thing is, plenty of people find it a thoughtful way to talk about differences, and that’s how we’d suggest you use it.
So should you base a big decision on your result? No. Bottom line: take it as a prompt for conversation.

Frequently asked questions about moon phase compatibility
What is my soulmate moon phase?
Your soulmate moon phase is the one exactly opposite yours, four steps around the cycle. Find your row in the chart above and look for the cell marked Soulmate.
What is a moon soulmate test?
A moon soulmate test finds the Moon phase on two people’s birthdays and checks whether the phases are opposite. If they are, the pair is Moon Soulmates. If they aren’t, you still get a pairing type that shows how close the two phases sit.
Is this moon compatibility test free?
Yes. It’s free, needs no sign-up and has no limit on runs. The calculation happens in your browser, so you can check every couple, friend and family pair you can think of.
What does my birth moon phase say about my personality?
In lunar astrology, your phase describes your pace and style, not your fate. New Moon people start things, Full Moon people express openly, and Last Quarter people reassess. The birth-phase table lists all eight meanings, which are symbolic tradition rather than science.
Does my moon phase change every year on my birthday?
Yes. A lunar cycle lasts about 29.5 days, so the same calendar date lands on a different phase each year. The Moon returns to nearly the same phase on your birthday about every 19 years, a pattern called the Metonic cycle.
What is the rarest moon phase to be born under?
None is rare. Each phase covers a 45° slice of the cycle, about 3.7 days, so roughly one person in eight is born under each one. Soulmates and twin flames each show up in about one pair in eight.
Why do other calculators give different soulmate pairs?
Some sites list pairs that aren’t opposites. A true soulmate pair is 180° apart, with lit portions that add up to 100%. Calculators also use different phase boundaries and time zone rules, so a birthday near a phase change can come out differently.
Is my birthday data private?
Yes. The calculation runs in your browser, so your birthdays aren’t sent to a server or saved in cookies or local storage. One exception: a share link carries the dates after the # sign, so anyone you give it to can read them.
What should you do with your moon phase result?
Run a few more pairs, because one reading is only the start. Try these:
- Your birthday against each person you’re close to.
- An anniversary or first-date moon against each birthday.
- A parent’s and a sibling’s birthday, for a family reading.
Then save the share link and talk through where your phases differ. That conversation is worth more than the label, so don’t skip it.
